Love your local market

In May 2015 Europe celebrates its market culture for the third time. From 13.05. – 27.05.2015 about 900 events were held on markets around Europe. From 21.05. – 22.05.2015 Rostock participated for the first time, also. The two days of action took place at the Rostock Neuen Markt  – in the Idea of “A market to touch”. For this purpose, in addition to the familiar local retailers for the first time more players in local and regional food in the region of Rostock got the chance to present their products and interests. The REGFOOD project is committed to improving the marketing of local and regional foods in the South Baltic Region and therefore supported the local action with the printing of campaign-bags. Inga Knospe (Chief Executive- Grossmarkt Rostock GmbH) thanked Prof. Dr. Andreas Diettrich (Department of Economic and founding education) for the support by the project.

'Experience' highlighted in green

In 2015, total of 15 students from UCSJ and University of Kristianstad have participated in internships with local food producers in Denmark and Sweden.

The main part of the internships included the development and implementation of a relevant, for a local food producer, marketing project that was based on a field research by the students. Such student-driven projects allowed students to learn a lot about the business situation for the host food producer.

In its turn, the local food producers gained new knowledge and valuable input in those areas where they did not have sufficient resources themselves.

Based on the experiences from their internships, the students produced reports and subsequently presented them in their home institutions.

On June 6 and June 12 mini-workshops were held at Farmers Market in Sorø, Denmark and at Gaarden – House of Culinary Heritage, Bornholm, Denmark (Gaarden – Bornholms Madkulturhus).

The purpose of the mini-workshops was to disseminate the lessons learned from the RegFood project, to the primary project’s target group, i.e. local food producers and customers.

Closing Conference September 2015

Events Concept

On September 14-15 2015 a conference will be held in Kristianstad, Sweden. The participants will consist of project partners, students, instructors, food producers and local and regional food network representatives.

Highlights from the agenda:

Monday September 14: Presentation of the project and anthology. Participants will receive a copy of the book.

  • Sharing experiences of the project, background to the conference (Anton Petrenko, Project Manager RegFood)
  • Presentation of the anthology by the editors and authors
  • Sessions where the authors will present their chapters. Collecting ideas/questions from the audience for future research.

Tuesday September 15: lecture about new ways to describe local and regional food and show ways for students and producers to cooperate.

  • Presentation “A model for the local and regional Food for tomorrow” (Martin Ragnar, PhD)
  • Exchanging knowledge and experience for innovation, Examples of activities in the project. (Philipp Brinkman, University of Münster)

Regfood closing conference September 2015



One of the major outcomes of the collaboration of project partners will be a publication of an anthology in a book form, entitled “Interdisciplinary perspectives on local and regional food in the South Baltic region”. The anthology will cover history, current state and future trends in local and regional food production in the South Baltic regions of Lithuania, Denmark, Sweden and Germany. More specifically, it will elaborate on the concept of local and regional food, its underlying social and economic benefits for consumers and producers, and present some real cases. Overall, the anthology will build on lessons learned from the capacity building workshops and research conducted by project partners throughout the project life-time. As the project-team of RegFood consists of teachers/researchers from many different disciplines there will be a very broad view of the subject. Some of the chapters are perhaps a bit provocative too!

The anthology is also thought to be used for education, that can be given to students at universities studying small scale food production, or to small scale producers who would like to develop.

The anthology is planned to be released at the final conference on September 14 -15. The book will also be available at the RegFood website.

Network Managers Workshop

On 18-20 February 2015 REGFOOD project organized a capacity building workshop in Copenhagen for 19 managers of 14 food networks from the four partner countries, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Lithuania.

The aim of the workshop was (1) to facilitate the acceptance and discussion of the concept of local and regional food by food networks, and (2) to facilitate exchanging experiences between food network managers in the regional food sector.

Some of the headlines from the workshop program are as follows:

  • What are current challenges for food networks?
  • How to develop a business strategy for food networks
  • How can food networks support innovation and business development?
  • How food networks can increase their members’ satisfaction?

Social network concept

From may 22-25 2014 a pilot course was held in Kristianstad, Sweeden.

The aim of the course was to test the teaching material for the REGFOOD course, which will be implemented in an online course at the four partner institutions.
